Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a painful inflammatory disease that damages the cartilage and ultimately the bones of joints. Rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect hands, wrist, ankles and feet initially. Later, shoulders, elbows, knees, hips, jaw and neck can also become involved. The pain is not confined to the joints. Untreated, it can lead to destruction, deformities and joint replacement. Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms may vary in severity and can come and go. It is two to three times more common in women than in men with onset usually between 40 and 60. It can also affect young children and older adults. Its symptoms are:

fatigue morning stiffness
joint pain rheumatoid nodules (firm bumps)
joint swelling weight loss
joints tender to the touch

On rank ordering medical treatments

Patient global assessment measured in clinical trials, that is, patient’s opinion of success, is used herein to rank order medical treatment effectiveness. Virtually all clinical trials evaluate patient global assessment, and the objective of medical treatment is patient satisfaction. Comparing medical treatments with each other using other measurements is complicated because there is no one commonly acceptable measurement that represents each rheumatic disease, and rheumatic disease laboratory tests are nonspecific. The companies sponsoring the clinical trials provided clinical trial data to make this rank ordering possible.
